Laser Gingivectomy and Frenectomy Treatment

At Phillips Family Orthodontics, we care about your oral health as a whole, not just the straightening of your smile, and sometimes use laser treatments to fix specific mouth problems. These lasers are precise and gentle, making them great for issues like too much gum tissue or tight bits that hold your lips and tongue.

In addition to aiding your overall oral health and well-being, advanced laser treatments have benefits over traditional methods. Laser treatment causes less bleeding, heals faster, and is less painful than surgery.

What Are Gingivectomies and Frenectomies?

A laser gingivectomy is a procedure used to address excessive gum tissue, a condition known as gingival hyperplasia. Gingival hyperplasia can lead to issues such as a gummy smile, where too much gum tissue is visible when you’re smiling for the camera. A laser gingivectomy helps to reshape and reduce excess gum tissue, improving the aesthetics of your smile and allowing for better oral hygiene.

A frenectomy is performed to address tight or restrictive frenum attachments in the mouth. There are two main types: lingual frenectomy, which addresses the tissue beneath the tongue, and labial frenectomy, which involves the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gum. Tight frenum attachments can sometimes cause issues with speech, tooth eruption, or discomfort, and a frenectomy helps to release these restrictions.
